The CAMELS Are Coming!!!

October - Texas Camel Corps (Doug Baum) Presentation to 7th Graders about "The Great Camel Experiment" and its role in Calhoun County history.


The Chocolate Community Historical Marker was dedicated Saturday April 22 at the Hatch Cemetery. (Behind Hatchbend Country Club on Meadowview Ln.)


A GPR Survey was conducted at Old Town Cemetery, aka Cemetery on the Ridge, on July 4th. 20 unmarked burials were located.

A GPR Survey was performed at the Indianola Cemetery in March 2022. A large number of unmarked burials was discovered by the survey.

Historical Marker applications to the Texas Historical Commission for 2021:

o Matagorda Island Lighthouse
o Louis Antoine Andry (Explorer/Cartographer)

Final: Both applications for 2021 markers were approved by the THC.

o Marker Update: The "Springs of Calhoun County" Historical Marker has been installed on FM1090, near Park Rd.


o October 29 - Texas Camel Corps - Presentation to 7th grade students about "The Great Camel Experiment" and its role in Calhoun County history.

o Resubmitted historical marker application for the Matagorda Island Lighthouse as an Undertold Marker Application.

o Received approval from Texas Historical Commission for historical marker application - "The Chocolate Community".

o Approved and funded AT-6 Texan life-size silhouette for installation at Port O'Connor Community Center. (Silhouette by Jal, New Mexico artist Brian Norwood.

o Received headstone found in Hayes County missing from the Indianola Cemetery (Margaret Clement).

o Received headstone (piece with date) that was at the Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg missing from the Indianola Cemetery (David F. Vance).
